Birding season in hatching
As flocks begin their spring migrations, Haywood becomes home to a multitude of bird species. From the low-lying valleys to the soaring mountaintops, here are the best places to observe songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and more.

Lake Junaluska’s varying altitudes makes for a birder’s paradise. The waterfront and surrounding gardens are home to dozens of species like ruby-throated hummingbirds, swans, finches, osprey, and a pair of nesting bald eagles.

The Great Balsam Mountains play host to Golden-crowned Kinglet, Brown Creep, Veery, and more. Find them in Pisgah and at Parkway overlooks like Cowee Mountain and Richland Balsam.
